TEMBO lap trays

The Tembo board was created with the purpose of introducing a designer’s aesthetic into the lap tray market.

Careful thought went into the choice of materials, size, weight, and durability—resulting in a lap tray that was both beautiful and functional. The trays and cushions were designed and manufactured by hand, in-house.

The limited edition sold quickly through our online shop, reaching customers across the U.S.A. and a design studio in France that purchased the remainder of the trays for their staff. The product was featured in Apartment Therapy.

The first tray was inspired by my love of design, typography, and useful tools.

The next design was a keyboard guide. At the time, I had been working on a large project designing print collateral for Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. The copy I working with was in both English and Hawaiian, which meant I had to access many characters through special combinations on my keyboard. I created a guide indicating all keyboard hidden characters and how to access them. It became useful not only for Hawaiian, but also for accessing special symbols in general. It was sold as both a lap top tray and as a signed and numbered art print. All artwork was screen printed.

The third design was simple and bold, inspired by my love of letter forms and the number 3.
